Sunset Beach
Section of Oahu: North Shore
Distance from Turtle Bay: Very close! 6-minute drive
Distance from Ko Olina: About a 1-hour drive
Sunset Beach is a fantastic beach for your Oahu vacation, especially if you’re staying in one of our Turtle Bay Vacation Villas! Just a few minutes’ drive down the road, Sunset Beach has one of the longest stretches of rideable surf in the world. Catch waves up to 30-feet tall, or stay on the beach and spectate—either way, it’s an exciting place to visit.
If you’re traveling with kids, make sure to keep a close eye on them when they're in the water. The surf is more manageable in the summer as opposed to winter (when the waves are at their highest), so that’s a great time to visit with little ones! Plus, the beach has plenty of room for sandcastles and other games. It’s also true to its namesake—Sunset Beach is a fantastic place to watch the sun set over the horizon.
Turtle Beach
Section of Oahu: North Shore
Distance from Turtle Bay: Right near our Turtle Bay vacation villas, you can walk!
Distance from Ko Olina: About a 1-hour drive
You don’t have to travel far from your villa to see the top beaches in Oahu! Turtle Beach is one of the most unique stops on the North Shore, especially if it’s your first time visiting the island. This is one of the best places to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) resting along the shoreline. While you can’t touch them, seeing them up close is still a really memorable experience. It’s an easy visit if you’re staying at Turtle Bay, and a great quick stop between other North Shore beaches!
Waikiki Beach

Section of Oahu: South Shore (Honolulu)
Distance from Turtle Bay: About a 1-hour and 20-minute drive
Distance from Ko Olina: About a 30-minute drive
Waikiki Beach is one of the most well-known beaches in the world, and it’s worth visiting at least once during your time on Oahu, especially if you have a rental car booked. Located in Honolulu, Waikiki Beach is known for its iconic views, beginner-friendly waves, and easy access to shops and restaurants. It’s a great spot to take a surf lesson, go for a swim, or just relax on the sand while taking in the skyline. If you’re looking for a slightly calmer area, you can head toward Magic Island, but the main stretch of Waikiki is where you’ll find the most energy and activity. It’s a perfect place to take your kids for the day!
Banzai Beach (Ehukai Beach Park)
Section of Oahu: North Shore
Distance from Turtle Bay: About a 10-minute drive
Distance from Ko Olina: About a 1-hour drive
Ehukai Beach Park, AKA Banzai Beach, is one of the most well-known surf spots on the North Shore, home to the famous Banzai Pipeline. During the winter months, this is where you’ll find some of the biggest waves on the island, along with experienced surfers and surf competitions. Even if you’re not surfing, it’s worth visiting just to watch from the shore. In the summer, the waves are much calmer, but it’s still best suited for experienced swimmers.

Ko Olina Lagoons
Section of Oahu: West Side (Ko Olina)
Distance from Turtle Bay: About a 1-hour drive
Distance from Ko Olina: Right near our vacation villas!
Located, of course, in Ko Olina, the Ko Olina Lagoons are one of the best spots on Oahu if you’re looking for calm waters, especially if you’re traveling with small kiddos. These man-made lagoons are protected by rock barriers, which helps keep the waves gentle year-round. No crazy waves here!
Each lagoon is slightly different, so you can explore them all and see which you like best, but you really can’t go wrong visiting them. Plus, they’re so close to our Ko Olina Villas!
Secret Beach Ko Olina
Section of Oahu: West Side (Ko Olina)
Distance from Turtle Bay: About a 1-hour drive
Distance from Ko Olina: Right near our vacation villas!
Secret Beach in Ko Olina is a quieter alternative to the main Ko Olina lagoons nearby. It’s not completely hidden, but it feels more tucked away than other beaches in the area. You can find it by walking past the Four Seasons Hotel and taking a left. There will be signs for public beach access and a small walkway to the cove! It’s a bit of a hidden gem, perfect for seeing wildlife, and one of the best Oahu snorkeling beaches!

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need a rental car to visit Oahu beaches?
If you plan to visit multiple areas (North Shore, Ko Olina, Waikiki), rent a car for at least a few days. Public transit works, but it’s slow and limits how many beaches you can realistically visit in a day. For flexibility and early-morning access, a car makes a big difference.
What’s the best time of day to go to Oahu beaches?
Go early, before 9 AM. Parking is easier, winds are calmer, and popular beaches like Waikiki and the North Shore get crowded by late morning. Early mornings also give you the safest and smoothest ocean conditions!
Do Oahu beaches require reservations or permits?
Most beaches are free and don’t require reservations, and all of the ones we mentioned in our blog don’t require a permit!
What should you bring for a beach day in Oahu?
At minimum: reef-safe sunscreen, water, snacks, and shade (umbrella or tent). Not all beaches have food or rentals nearby, especially on the North Shore or quieter west-side spots. Pack everything you’ll need for a few hours.
